Science Tools
The Tools module introduces students to the tools scientists use for both qualitative and quantitative observations. Students learn to use tools such as their 5 senses, rulers, and balance scales through hands-on activities.

This interactive activity provides students with the opportunity to use their quantitative observation skills to help the vet identify the correct animal.

Science Tools
Tools are used to collect information. Some tools, like rulers, are used to measure or to find out how big something is. Other tools, like hand lenses, are used to observe and study things carefully. This module introduces students to the different types of tools used in science and how they help us study the world around us.
Core Concept
In science, a tool is something you use to collect data, or information. Scientists use tools to help them observe, describe, compare, measure, and communicate.
Essential Vocabulary
balance scale, beaker, data, equal, hand lens, mass, measurement, microscope, record, ruler, senses, telescope, temperature, thermometer, tool, volume
Science4Us provides the essentials that teachers need to confidently and effectively lead a classroom in any science lesson. This demo shows:
- One section of the “Teacher Explain”
- One of the 40 teacher support documents
They play online games in which they choose tools, estimate, and compare measurements. Measurement activities allow students to meet math standards while learning to collect and compare data in the way that scientists do.
